BLOOMING HEATHER
That is why the Dutch Nature Reserve Organisation "Natuurmonumenten" cuts peats on a regular basis, so that the heather can regenerate. Also cows and Drenthe moor sheep graze in the heather fields. This is how the open landscape can be maintained and the future of its plants, such as bog gentian and sundew assured. Butterflies, dragonflies, reptiles, amphibians and birds keep the habitat, they deserve.
More natural woods
Within the Dwingelderveld National Park drifting sand areas are alternated with woods, heather fields and juniper bushes. The existing boring production woods are regularly transformed into a more natural wood. We create open spaces and do not remove dead trees, which enables the lesser and great spotted woodpecker to brood in hollows. Dead wood does not need to be removed. Underneath the bark live larvae, that are on top of the menu for song birds.
INFORMATION CENTRE SPIER
The information centre in Spier has a large scale model of the Dwingelderveld National Park next to photos from the surrounding area. This centre is not very big, but nice enough to pay a visit to. It also has a snack bar with terrace.
VISITOR'S CENTRE RUINEN
In Ruinen at the visitor's centre you can obtain a lot of information about National Park Dwingelderveld. Here you can engage in a number of fun activities. There is a path, leading into the water with glass walls on both sides, so that you can look under the water. All kinds of souvenirs can be bought, including nature books and cuddly toys, It also has a scale model of the National Park Dwingelderveld.
